Turret guns in "Entanglement" help!

I've got past the section where you set up 2 turret guns against the
Combine.
Now I am in a much larger section where you need to set up 3.

I probably could do with some advise about where to put the guns, but are
the guns as useless as they seem? In fact, I don't think the guns fire
against the Combine.

Is it a bug? Have I done something wrong?

Look at this in non-proportional (fixed width) font, e.g. 'courier'.

(T is turret, with arrow to where it points)
Before (turrets in their little alcoves):

The one turret on the left side can be knocked over, but it's rather easy to
just put it up straight again (you will then suffer some damage).
The two firing in opposite directions are placed very close behind each
other. In my fight, they did not get knocked over, because no CP/Combine
could get behind one to kick one over. And blast the occasional man-hack out
of the air.

It is basically to have your defensive circle as little/close as possible.

Good luck.

Check out the walkthrough at
www.gamefaqs.com

I picked them up, turned them around and put them back into the little
cupboards. 2 on one side, one on the other. I then stood in the empty
cupboard and shot any combine who got past the turrets.

Advantage being the turrets can't be knocked over by the combine.

This is similar to what I did... In the cell-block scenario I took them out
and placed them right infront of the closet in a defensive posture, then
ducked into the closet with my shotty and just owned anyone who came close.
However, this was the area where the dudes came from like 6 directions, not
the one you described...

In the control room one (where Alyx comes through the vent after) I set up 3
of them in a defensive position on one entrance, (Which never got breached)
and I held the other one personally.

The thing I found with the turrets is if you use less than three together
they are not very effective. So I'd always use 3 to hold one entry and then
take the other one myself.

I like this plan. I'll have to try it. Tried surrounding myself with them
up against a wall, but......

I've been stuck there for a while. I'll see if this works.

First, remember that the soldiers won't arrive until you place the
third turret, so take your time, sweep the area for ammo and prepare
well.
Use the crates to climb back up to balcony and go back to the offices
and water room to get as much furniture as you can. Best things are the
metal door, table and filing cabinets.
Use this stuff to build yourself a den in one of the corridors (I
prefer the one with the ammo box). The turrets can peek over the
cabinets and still fire. I like to put one turret in one of the cells,
barricaded in by the door. It's just tall enough to shoot over the
door, but virtually impregnable. Prop the door up with a couple of
barrels.
Put the wooden crates inside your den, piled up in the corners to block
up the windows. If the soldiers don't see you, they won't use grenades.
Remember to block one end of your den with just an opening for the
turret to peer through. You need to be able to get in the other end,
carrying the final turret. Once inside, place the turret and quickly
plug the "doorway" (eg. with a barrel).
Crouch and wait it out. You may need to blast a few manhacks and reset
your turrets if the barricades get knocked about (depends on how you
built them). Use the garvity gun to get rid of any grenades if the
soldiers do see you.

One trick is to block an entrance or two with lots of debris. They can't get
in and you can snipe them afterwards or set a turret up. The trick is that
you don't have a turret shoot at the doorway with debris, or it will
eventually shatter the items you are using to block the doorway. I then had
an extra turret to use in a tought spot.

You can also, if careful, bring a turret along from the first turret fight.
it is not easy to carry sometimes, but it is nice to have.

Be sure to take an extra turret along for the last fight, too

I think this is the first thing I'll try.

Another stratergy is to pile up boxes so you can get up on the landing (
there are just enuf boxes. ) Throw 2 turrets up there and set them up on
the stairwell - take the third with you when you jump up the boxes again
and stick it also in the stairwell.

Go make some coffe or get a beer and you're done - well actually you
have to stick around incase they get knocked over but most combine will
be mincemeat. If you have 4 guns ( one dragged with your from the last
enouncter ) then you can truly just stand around.

Remember to jump back down to the landing to let the game commence.

I tried this and it worked well. The combine seemed to ignore me and try to
take out the turrets.

You mean you can actually set them up again? I know that Alyx kept telling
me to do this but I found it easier said than done - I picked them up
horizontal and they stayed horizontal!
In the end I managed to do it by putting them all in the lit cell and
standing on the shelf - from there they would go upright.

P.S. Did they really intend us to "cheat" like this or did they intend us to
fight it out in the open, dashing from the ammo crate to the power and
health rechargers and back? Has anyone ever survived this way? I don't see
how you could for long - there are just too many of them.

Thanks for that. I think this should have been explained in training - not
that you get any real training in HL2 - or help. I get the impression that
they are so immersed in the game they have forgotten that you need to
explain stuff to people at least once.

The worst example is CS:Source which came with my HL2 - No help whatsoever -
If you are new to online and steam you wont have a clue.

Personally I like a bit more realism - none of the tactics that work would
work against real oponents even if they were terrible shots - they'd just
keep lobbing grenades.

By far the simplest plan I've come across. I just tried it out. hahahaha.
Just cool.

A busier strategy, which was the first I tried out, was the one I read
about carrying along the 2 turrets from the previous chapter.

wahahahaha. Let the slaughter begin!!
I was so enthusiastic about this one that I actually took every single
turret I came across even before said previous chapter.

Well... soon enough I realised that the programmers only had a specific
set of turrets with a 'stand-upright' property 😛
So I figured I might as well still use those I brought along to clog the
staircases 😛

However the trouble of bringing the 'upright' two along really pays off.
Makes for not just a cool battle that I sit through, but one that,
coupled with the idea of using barricades, is really Hot! Hot! Hot!

That's what I call entertainment! :)

Rico.
