Question VGA to HDMI adapter is not working.

I have a moniter that only has VGA connectivity and I wanted to connect it to my macbook, that has an HDMI output.
When I plug the HDMI end of the adapter into my Macbook, the monitor doesn't connect and my macbook screen starts to flicker and my mouse jumps around.

Any solutions or am I doing something wrong?

Did you buy the single cable with HDMI-VGA on either end, or the adapter?

It needs to be "active" to convert the digital (HDMI) signal to analog (VGA). I see nothing in that listing that would suggest it is.
