For example, if there is a BIOS virus in my computer, what components of the computer would it have run through before it reached the BIOS (e.g. CPU, modem, RAM, etc.)?

Every piece of software travels thru CPU and RAM. Its life starts from a file system, and there're various ways for it to land here (copied from another file system, downloaded, created by a process, etc).

Does a BIOS virus pass through a storage device (like a HDD or SSD) before infecting the BIOS?

Depends on the mode of infection really but most often yes even if its only in the users temp folder.
