[SOLVED] 12900k video editing build

I'm building a new system for video editing in Premiere Pro and After Effects. So far im looking at:

• CPU: 12900k
• Motherboard: z690 aorus pro / aorus ultra / aourus master / asus hero, MSI MPG Z690 Carbon?
• RAM: DDR5 64 GB, 4000-4800 mhz
• PSU: 750 - 850W
• GPU: 3060 ti / 3070 / 3080
• Storage: 2x Samsung 980 pro 1 TB
• Cooling: already have a Dark Rock Pro 4

I definitely want a 12900k and DDR5 for video editing. Im wondering which motherboard to pick?

features i would like in a motherboard:

• DDR5 with support for quad channel memory
• PCIE 4.0
• atleast WIFI 6
• decent enough audio codec
• ?

Also let me know if you have any suggestions for the other parts like RAM, PSU etc.

The dark rock pro 4 is a good cooler and all but will it tuff out a 2 hour render with a 12900k going full bore without throttling severely? I think not. 280mm AIO is the minimum for that 250 watt CPU. You don't need to go much past 290-320 dollars for the motherboard without massive diminishing returns. For the graphics card on the EVGA website, just make and account and login to purchase, I think.

The biggest challenge would most likely be the memory. First, there's none slower than 4800 and second if you want a 4x16 GB set, there aren't any currently available. You would most likely be looking at 2x32 GB or you would have to get 2 sets of 2x16 and hope they match.

actually 2x32GB would work just as well right? Unless quad channel is better than dual channel? I assume its kinda the same thing, you just run both in XMP right

I don't recall ever reading any articles showing test results comparing dual and quad channels, so I'm in the dark here. Most of the recent tests have been DDR5 vs. DDR4. You'll probably need to start another message topic on quad vs. dual unless you can find some test results I've never seen. But if you have the time to wait for a larger supply of DDR5 some 4 stick packages may come to market.

Wait a minute. I'm also making a build and as I was flipping through the mobos I found out ASUS actually made one specifically for productivity work. Look:

ASUS ProArt Z690-CREATOR WIFI

I'm fairly sure it's mostly just a gimmick, but it does have everything you need, the DDR5, PCIE 5.0, WIFI6, etc. And heck, it doesn't look half bad. Gimmick or not, it would look pretty sleek in a creator build.

On ram, currently a Z690 based system will run in dual channel mode regardless if the kit is 2 or 4 sticks.
Ram must be matched so 4 stick kits offer no real value and are usually more expensive.

DDR5 ram speeds are impressive, but you pay for that with higher cas numbers.
How this impacts your particular workload, I don't know.
On balance DDR5 ram performs about the same as the cheaper DDR4.

What is the make/model of your case?
That is the key to good air cooling.
If it has 3 120mm or 2 140mm front intakes, you are good.
I would try your DRP4 and see how how do.
I think you will be fine.
You can always change out the cooler later, but there are not many air coolers sufficiently stronger to make that worthwhile.

Speaking of worth, buy the samsung 980 PRO if budget is not an issue.
But the 970 versions will be more reasonable and you will not be able to tell the performance difference without a benchmark.

I would start with a single 2tb ssd instead of 2 1tb devices.
It is simply easier to manage one large C drive.
Performance is similar.
